No one would bet their life on The Panthers who, in addition to having lost many key players during training camp, had to face the powerful Redskins in Washington. Many view the Redskins as serious Super Bowl contenders. However the outcome was not the walkover the Redskins expected, quite the contrary; the game was a close one from the very first minute and the teams delivered an exciting performance.
Stephen Davis who will sign a whooping 90-million contract over the next nine seasons, made the difference in the game's final score of 20 to 17 in favor of the Redskins. Davis scored a touchdown and gain 133 yards rushing. Tshimanga Biakabutuka was the Panthers best offensive player. He carried the ball 15 times for 88 yards, in addition to 3 catches adding 28 yards to his gains.
Biakabutuka performed one of the best runs of the game. Late in the first quarter on a third down and 4 yards to go, he ran no less than 41 yards to lead to Richie Cunningham's 30 yards field goal.
Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder tried to improve his team defense with the acquisition of established players in the like of Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, and Mark Carrier. Last season, the Redskins defense ranked 30th in the NFL. If Snyder's strategy proved costly, it certainly paid off on Sunday, because this unit only allowed one field goal and one touchdown on a 20 yards pass to Wesley Walls, with only 1:52 left on the clock. The other Carolina touchdown happened in first quarter on a 92 yards kick off return by Michael Bates who is also a member of the decade all-star team. This was Bates 5th career return for a touchdown.
Bruce Smith got 2 sacks and caused a fumble at a critical moment in the game. Coach Norv Turner said: Those who thought that Bruce could no longer follow the rhythm were wrong. Defensively, he helps everyone on the field.
Ray Rhodes who was hired as defensive coordinator used an aggressive tactic in order to exploit Sanders and rising star, Champ Bailey's potential at the corners. Brad Johnson, who might have felt insecure after Jeff George's four-year contract was signed, proved that he wanted to remain the team's starting quarterback.
With only 2:46 to play, Johnson A broke the tie by scoring a touchdown following a one yard run. He also completed 25 of his 36 passes for 234 yards without being intercepted. Steve Beuerlein, his counterpart, was less successful when he was sacked six times by the Redskins. Smith managed what was paramount to the outcome of the game: When he forced the Panthers to a 21 yards lost and he gave the ball back to the Redskins.
The turnover led to Brett Conway's 24 yards field goal, which brought an even score of 10-10 with 8:09 minutes left in the third quarter
Beuerlein said that the Redskins put a lot of pressure and they did an incredible job. Bueurlein finished the game with 17 completed passes on 26 attempts for 183 yards. Next week, the Panthers will play against the San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco lost 36-38 last Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons.
